Feng Shui Design Promotes Positive Energy | Print View | PDF View
Feng shui design focuses on the five elements of the universe's energy: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. By properly incorporating these energies into your home design, you create a balance that promotes wealth, health and inner peace.
Chi or energy is an important aspect of feng shui design. Certain things, such as the placement of furniture or the positioning of an object, can affect the flow of chi. So it's essential to place items in areas that encourage a flow from room to room, rather than block it.
To bring positive chi into your home, consider a feng shui design that incorporates fresh flowers or live plants, mirrors, water fountains, an aquarium and artwork. Keep in mind the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water and try to incorporate one or more of them into a room. A room's color scheme is also important. Try to create a balance, a Yin and Yang if you will. Yin colors are blue, black, purple, white, pink and green, while Yang colors are yellow, orange, tan, brown, beige, red, mauve, maroon, lavender and gold.
With feng shui design, every object in your home serves a purpose. So organization is key. The Frugal Home Design website has a number of storage items and decorative organizers that can help organize your belongings to improve your home's chi or energy. Removing clutter, which can stifle the flow of chi is also important. Be sure to throw out any chipped dishes, worn items, or burned out lightbulbs because they only drain your home's energy.
Feng shui involves several tools to help determine what items need to be in which rooms to achieve balance and good energy. One such tool is a bagua and its use in feng shui design helps to determine placement. Some basic rules to follow that apply to all homes are to place mirrors in small foyers or hallways to create better energy flow, remove mirrors from bedrooms to encourage restful sleep, angle sofas and chairs so they're not directly facing the television, and enclose televisions and computers in cabinets to minimize their influence on what is natural in our lives. Furthermore, chairs and sofas should be arranged in groups to promote conversation, instead of isolation.
There are several features in homes that can disrupt energy flow. Feng shui design focuses on these areas to promote more natural energy flow. Long, narrow hallways cause energy to flow in a straight line, which isn't a good thing because it will just rush through. A more natural flow can be achieved by placing plants or large pictures at the end of the hallway. Corners of rooms can be energized with plants, candles or small lamps. The goal is to take dark, stagnant areas and add items to create energy.
A good feng shui design features colors that are balanced, uses organizers to remove clutter and incorporates items that reflect the elements of the universe and boost energy. With a feng shui design, a house is turned into a vibrant home with good balance and a feeling of positive energy.
